Medicare Advantage Plans—often referred to as “Part C” or “MA Plans”—act as another way of obtaining your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage.  Being offered by private Medicare-approved companies under the rules and regulations of Medicare officials, Medicare Advantage Plans are often confined to a fixed network of providers that offer extra coverage benefits such as dental care, eyeglasses, wellness programs, and “Part D” drug coverage.  In some cases, out-of-network coverage will be provided in your plan, but often at a higher rate.

To help mitigate unexpected costs, Medicare Advantage Plans set a limit on your annual out-of-pocket expenses for covered services.  Also, to clear up any confusion, if you do decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you’ll still have Original Medicare, but will be getting most of your Part A and Part B coverage through your Advantage Plan.  However, it is still important to keep your Medicare card in a safe place in the event you decide to switch back to Original Medicare completely.

Almost everything covered under Original Medicare parts A & B (doctor and hospital coverage) are covered under your Advantage Plan including all emergency, urgent care, and almost all medically necessary services. Depending on what plan you choose, some of the additional benefits that Medicare Advantage (Plan C) can include are: dental, vision, hearing, and even fitness programs (like gym memberships or discounts).

Other plans offer even more benefits, including coverage for transportation to doctor appointments, OTC drugs, and other health and wellness benefits. These packages provide benefits customized to treat specific conditions. Milestone Medicare will help you find the right plan to meet your specific needs.

Is a Medicare Advantage Plan right for you?

When it comes to deciding whether or not a Medicare Advantage Plan is right for you, it is important to understand the benefits they provide over Original Medicare coverage.  For instance, many Medicare Advantage Plans offer coverage for services that Original Medicare does not; such as hearing, dental, vision, and wellness programs (i.e. gym memberships, etc.).  Advantage Plans can also be individually tailored to provide treatment and services for specific conditions or illnesses.  These added benefits cover services ranging from transportation costs to doctor visits, over-the-counter drugs, as well as other services that promote health and wellness.  That said, it is important to identify and compare plans that best suit your needs and qualifications before you decide to enroll.

Medicare Advantage Plans must follow Medicare’s rules

Medicare pays a fixed amount for your coverage each month to the companies offering Medicare Advantage Plans. These companies must follow rules set by Medicare. However, each Medicare Advantage Plan can charge different out-of-pocket costs and have different rules for how you get services (like whether you need a referral to see a specialist or if you have to go to doctors, facilities, or suppliers that belong to the plan’s network for non-emergency or non-urgent care). These rules can change each year.  The plan must notify you about any changes before the start of the next enrollment year.

Each year you have the option to keep your current plan,  choose a different plan, or switch to Original Medicare.

If you are interested in a Medicare Advantage plan, the next step is to find one that fits your personal needs and budget. Milestone Medicare can help you find the perfect policy for your situation.
